Queensland Walking Trails
Walking the Queensland Trails Queensland offers some of the most picturesque and enjoyable bushwalking experiences in Australia. There is such a diversity of walks to choose in South East Queensland, with wide coastlines, rainforests, waterfalls, mountains and vast plains all within easy driving distance from Brisbane.

Take the drive up to Cairns via Townsville and Rockhampton and you will be on the road to incredible camping grounds and walking tracks that are hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered. The benefit of travelling in a rental car is the freedom to choose when and where you are going to stop and for how long. If you are an avid bush walker, this is one of the best ways to enjoy getting from one park to another in comfort and with plenty of flexibility. Plan a rough itinerary ahead of schedule, with plenty of room to make changes along the way.

Most national parks in Queensland are closer to the coastline and run up and down the east coast of Australia. As the climate is mainly tropical, most times of the year are perfect for heading out and enjoying some of the most beautiful and hidden treasures the sunny state has to offer. Be careful in the middle of summer and bring plenty of water and sunscreen as the temperatures can rise quickly. You will also need to plan ahead if you are camping, with permits required in most national parks.

Queensland’s highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere, is more for the advanced bushwalker but the views are certainly worthwhile. Located not far from Cairns, you will need to set aside a few days to reach the summit. Further north there are walks covering a few days in the famous Daintree rainforest. You need to plan well for these walks as they take two to three days, but cover some incredible scenery.

Fraser Island and Hinchinbrook Island are both worth visiting for their long walks and spectacular scenery. Both large national park islands, they have walks for all levels of fitness, from one day to five days on Hinchinbrook. Carnarvon Gorge has fantastic walks for the whole family. With a large and well maintained camping ground, you can set off straight from your doorstep to see some of the most breathtaking views and natural rock formations. It takes about nine hours from Brisbane via Roma, but stay at least a week and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of a true oasis in the heart of the outback.

Closer to south east Queensland, there are plenty of national parks in each direction. Mount Barney is popular to locals and tourists especially as it is the highest mountain in South Queensland. Set up camp below and then set of for a day or two to experience a diversity of terrain as you head up the mountain. This is not for beginners, with steep climbing involved in some sections, however the summit is worth the trek for a birds eye view of the surrounding park through to the coastline. We took the family to the lower portals on a day trip, it was still a trek taking close to two hours, but worth the rest at the rock pools.

If you are looking for a lot of walks in one area, Lamington National Park, located closer to the New South Wales border, is one of the best choices as there is so much available for all fitness levels, there is an abundance of birdlife and wildlife, and it covers an extensive rainforest area. There are a number of shorter walks leading to some incredible views, and there are a number of overnight walks for keener bushwalkers.

The Sunshine Coast offers some incredible walks in the Great Sandy National Park. The crystal clear streams running through pristine white sands is something you have to see, and there are a number of amazing camping grounds available, especially in Rainbow Beach and across to Fraser Island. The Cooloola Wilderness Trail is the most popular and from start to finish is a three day walk. It covers some of the best rainforest and freshwater sections of the park and is worth the visit. The Hinterland Great Walk in the Sunshine Hinterland starts in Montville and meanders over some of the most breathtaking mountainous scenery, including the famous Kondalilla Falls, ending in the Mapleton forest. You can enjoy this walk in sections or complete the full seven hour walk over a few days.

This is only a handful of some incredible walking tracks available in Queensland. Maybe choose a few and plan your driving holiday around them. There is nothing better than getting outdoors and enjoying nature at its best in spectacular surroundings, and there is no better time to start planning your bushwalking holiday than now.

Sydney Airport Parking Fees – What Are Your Options to Keep Costs Down?
Airport parking fees are relatively high when compared to the past.  As a proportion of travel cost (when compared to airline flight costs) airport parking prices have increased substantially in recent years.  So how can you ensure that you do not pay any more than you should for parking?  Let’s find out…

In recent years we have seen airfares reduce in cost.  In fact Virgin Blue, when they began flying in Australia, said that they were not competing with Qantas for passengers.  Their strategy and argument was that they were offering low priced air travel that attracts people who could not ordinarily afford to fly.  This resulted in more people traveling to the airports than before.  Consequently, the demand for airport parking increased, thereby prompting airports to invest in additional parking facilities.

Let’s look at the facts using Sydney Airport in Australia as an example.

Sydney Airport is Australia’s most significant piece of aviation infrastructure, handling around half of all international passengers travelling to and from Australia. Sydney’s resident population is expected to grow by twenty five percent within 25 years, with well over 5 million people expected to make the city their home.  This will undoubtedly place more strain on infrastructure for motorists.

Sydney airport has twenty two thousand aircraft movements per month (based on June 2009 figures).  Thirty one thousand passengers will depart Sydney Airport during the weekdays and twenty nine thousand over the weekend. Twenty nine percent of people who visit Sydney Airport will park their car and sixty five percent of people who collect passengers from the airport will park their car at the airport.

So with a growing population and more people travelling, airports around Australia will struggle to meet demand for parking.  In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the number of innovative solutions to this growing problem.  New businesses that specialize in airport transfers have sprung up and are becoming very popular.  Here’s what’s happening.

Businesses that offer alternative parking solutions to using airport facilities are typically located very close to the airport.  To access their services, you can book ahead and then on the day of travel, you drive to the service provider’s location and check your car in.  Most then offer a shuttle bus service to the airport and some offer a more personalized service.  Most have dedicated drop-off zones, so are able to drop you right outside the departure terminal doors or will collect you from in front of arrivals.  This is a benefit for those carrying luggage because typically the airport parking facilities are some way from the terminal.

These businesses offer additional services too.  These include such things as security (CCTV or secure facilities), and a car wash so that you collect your car in a clean state.  You won’t find these services at airports!

So where can you find these facilities?  Well, we have made it easy for you…

It is not easy to find alternatives to parking at Sydney Airport.  There are websites that have already collected information on all the providers in one place.  They also show comparative pricing to make it easier to choose.  Have a look at the biography in this article for information on Sydney airport parking and Brisbane airport parking.

In summary, the population of capital cities is growing and airline prices have reduced.  These two factors alone are having a significant impact on the numbers of people who travel by air.  This has led to growth in demand for parking and that, in turn, has driven up prices.

Sydney New Year’s Celebrations
Sydney New Years fireworks are often heralded as the best New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world and it’s not hard to see why. Every year over a million people gather around Sydney Harbour (that’s more people than in Times Square) to see the spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky for miles around.

The centrepiece of the celebrations is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Every year, visitors are dazzled by the shower of fireworks launched from the bridge and the golden curtain of light created beneath it.

But there is more to the Sydney New Years celebrations than just the midnight fireworks. The party officially begins at 1pm with the firing of the Fort Dennison cannon. Then, throughout the afternoon party-goers are treated to various formation fly-overs and displays.

As night settles in, an Indigenous Welcome ceremony is performed on Sydney Harbour. It is a ritual of purification and unity.

At 9pm, the family fireworks begin and are followed by the Harbour of Light Parade. The family fireworks give families with young children and anyone who does not want to stay out until midnight a chance to see the fireworks and join in the festivities.

The Harbour of Light Parade features over 50 boats including Sydney’s Heritage Fleet, Tall Ships, Sydney Ferries, charter boats and private vessels. They follow a 15km circuit around the harbour and each features an illuminated emblem to represent this year’s theme. If you want to be a part of the parade, you will need to purchase a ticket on board one of the charter boats participating in the parade.

The festivities culminate with the magnificent fireworks display at midnight. Every year the display gets bigger, more sophisticated and more impressive. The 2007/8 spectacular will be the largest and most complex fireworks display on record. No wonder Sydney-siders love Sydney New Years!

Wonders of Katherine
Known for majestic Katherine Gorge, Katherine can be found in central Northern Territory and is the third largest city in the state. Tourists come to see the region surrounding the town for its unbelievable beauty, and it is a great base for travel to the attractions further out especially by car. You can travel up north to the Adelaide River and on to Darwin, or down to Mataranka, with miles of sunburnt country in between.

One of the most entrancing aspects of the gorge, which is located in the Nitmiluk National Park, are its majestic cliffs that soar to the sky as you glide along in the river below. Depending on what time of year you visit, you can take between two to five hours to cross the gorges. In the dryer seasons the main gorge takes about two hours. The more extreme adventurers carry their canoes between gorges as the water drops so there is only a rock crevice in between.

Another option is to jump on one of the helicopter flights which is more expensive but the views are hard to describe and you are guaranteed to see the gorge from a completely different perspective.

The Gorge is where you will find most tourists in the area, attracted by the spectacular scenery and scenery. Try to avoid visiting between November and March as the waters rise rapidly. Bring your togs as swimming is permitted at the gorge, and it you will enjoy a chance to cool off surrounded by some of Australia’s most captivating scenery.

During my trip to Katherine I was stunned by the vastness of the entire gorge system. It is an oasis that remains relatively untouched by civilisation. The boat cruise is worth taking especially since you have made such an effort to get this far, just don’t forget your camera to capture the views.

There are also a number of walking trails which stretch through the park. Some take five days to complete, and there are also camping sites along the trails for those who want to take their time.

Not far from the entrance to Katherine Gorge is a road which takes you to Edith Falls. Make sure you visit here to experience the pool surrounded by pandanus plants which will be a refreshing end or beginning to your experience at the gorge. There are a number of walking trails in the park which are for all levels of fitness with some beautiful views.

South of Katherine you will find the Cutta Cutta caves. Put this attraction on your ‘must see’ list as they are not only close enough to visit but feature a ‘Tropical Wonderland’ walk. These limestone caves are incredible, with the unique Orange Horseshoe Bats an added bonus.

Another well known natural attraction are the Katherine Hot Springs. You will more than likely arrive hot and sweaty, park your car looking for anything that resembles an oasis, or any type of pool but all you see is dirt tracks and thick tropical vegetation. After a walk that winds through the palms, all of a sudden you see the crystal clear steaming pools, which stretch long enough to give you some room to yourself to enjoy the wonderful therapeutic waters.

My experience of these springs was heavenly. It is a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime to indulge in the ultimate spa, sauna and pool in one. Make sure you visit this unique part of the territory even if it to dip your feet in the pools and enjoy the steam.

Closer to town, there is plenty to do. Head to the Katherine Museum to learn more about the aviation and war history of the region, especially since it is housed in the old aerodrome buildings. Spend an afternoon at the Springvale Homestead which is owns the title of the most ancient original homestead in the Territory. There is a café and barbeque facilities, plus a photo gallery covering the history of the area.

Katherine is remarkably untouched and is an enjoyable town to visit. There is still great diversity here, with present and past mixing to bring a richer cultural insight into the area. Plan to stay a while to enjoy the freedom your rental car brings you and prepare for long stretches of outback landscape without a glimpse of humanity. The perfect escape holiday.
