Things to do and see in Perth

PerthThere is so much to see and do in the state that is quite distinct from the rest of Australia. Perth is located a long way from all the other major cities in Australia, in the state of Western Australia, and as the saying goes: Western Australia is a place for ‘holidays of a different nature’. So let me tell you why this is the case.

There is nothing like the warm and welcoming weather that is found in the capital, Perth. So make sure you pack for a warm adventure, especially in the summer time! Make sure you plan your trip to Perth according to the high season months where there are seasonal attractions on show. In October, the famous spring Wildflower Festival is held at the iconic Kings Park, which showcases Australia’s largest and most diversified native wildflowers and plants. Start your journey here where you can get a bird’s eye view from the lookout for the star attractions and visiting spots.

Perth holds a wide array of unique architecture and interior design within landmarks. Visit Perth’s the Old Court House which is the oldest building, take a stroll to the impressive bell-tower, Swan Bells and visit St George’s Cathedral in Pier Street with its fine jarrah ceilings.

For those interested in culture and art, visit the Perth Cultural Centre and the Art Gallery of Western Australia, where you will be enlightened with famous collections of Aboriginal and Australian art. Those history buffs will enjoy a visit to the Western Australian Museum, which includes looking at the original Perth Gaol!

In terms of dining and wining, visit Northbridge which has a lovely variety of restaurants, particularly Italian and Asian, as well as popular nightclubs and bars to relax or dance the night away. Other famous streets to check out are Barrack Street, King Street and also Subiaco which caters for all cuisines.

What makes Perth particularly unique is the Perth Mint and Swan River. You’ll be bedazzled at the Perth Mint where gold is poured and coins are being minted. Swan River is a beautiful display which flows down to Fremantle and up to the wineries and is central to the city with stunning real estate on the waterfront. I recommend a dinner cruise where you can travel the depths of Perth’s star attractions at night.

Lastly, Perth is home to Penguin Island which is home to a breeding colony of around 1000 penguins, a must see for those animal lovers! There are also sea lion and dolphin spotting opportunities, with just a ferry ride south of Perth. As you can see Perth is a unique, vibrant and wholesome city for those who want to experience Australian culture at its finest!

Sightseeing in Melbourne

MelbourneMelbourne prizes itself as Australia’s cultural precinct for good food, wine, art, museums, entertainment and more for the unique individual. Successful tourism campaigns include, ‘You’ll love every piece of Victoria’ and ‘It’s easy to lose yourself’, as well as ‘Victoria, you’ll never want to leave’. So let me explore why the capital, Melbourne fits these campaigns to a tee.

Firstly, Melbourne has a multicultural mix of people from more than 100 countries! This in itself shows that you will experience the cultures of the world all at the one hot spot. In particular, Melbourne has the largest Greek community outside of Athens, so it’s not surprising there is the finest in Greek cuisine and dancing!

Melbourne has been referred to as having a European feel about it, in terms of the fashion, restaurants, architecture, Yarra ‘canal’ and the overall culture. Not to mention the weather that is unpredictable and quite dark in the winter months. However, this is not to stop you from experiencing Melbourne at its finest.

Melbourne is unique in that through a narrow alley way you will find a standalone bar or restaurant that is really popular. The winding alleyways unearth mysterious discoveries. I remember when I recently visited Melbourne with some friends and took an adventure of my own down Beaney Lane to find Melbourne’s most exclusive nightclub, ‘The Spice Market’. This is a must see for those who enjoy a good night out on the scene with hanging bird cages, large Buddhist statues, scattered fruit bowls, a central waterfall and not to mention what happens when you request a bottle of expensive champagne where uniformed girls march to a celebratory song to deliver your purchased prize!

However, the main highlights include the vast array of shopping finds, the Australian Open Tennis in summer, the big Victorian Markets, the grand Crown Casino, IMAX Theatre, Luna Park, Melbourne Zoo and the beautiful Yarra River that is central to the Melbourne precinct. You will never be bored in Melbourne! Make sure you go to the Victorian Arts Centre that is in the heart of the city, home to Melbourne’s music, dance and drama scene alongside the Melbourne Concert Hall, Sunday Market and Performing Arts Museum which is one of the world’s best theatre museums.

Take a ferry or river cruise down the Yarra River to see all the sights and sounds of Melbourne. So that’s Melbourne in a nutshell, where there is something amazing for everyone to experience.

Campervan Hire in Tasmania

With so much diversity squeezed into such a small area, Tasmania lends itself very well to campervan travel. Whether cruising through the beaches of the east coast or at the foot of Cradle Mountain, you’re in for a visual treat any day of the year. The comfort of a campervan allows you to explore as much of the island as you want, taking your time at every scenic turn. It’s an option you don’t always have when you’re on your own at peak season, scrambling for limited slots at hotels and organized tours.

Campervan hire in Tasmania is particularly useful for those who want to go up the highlands, where the best lake and mountain systems thrive. The problem with these sites isn’t so much the access as it is the energy: after a four-hour bus ride, you’re never really rested enough for a day’s hike. Going by campervan is much more comfortable—you can go at your own pace, choose your own stops, and reach the site in great form.

If you’re into outdoor activity and adventure travel, Tasmania campervan hire is probably the best way to get around. When you’re not tied down by bus or train schedules, you can pack up and go any time: come to the beaches early to avoid the midday surfing crowd, or late in the afternoon to catch the sunset. Campervans are also great if you need to bring your own gear—canoes and kayaks, surfboards and diving suits—which can be a drag to check in and claim when you take the bus.

Another unique advantage to traveling by campervan is that you can take less-traveled roads and see parts of the island that don’t make it to the travel books: quaint roadside cafes, unexplored beaches, little creeks and gardens just hiding behind the thoroughfare. These are particularly abundant in southwest Tasmania, where there’s decidedly less tourist activity. Hiring a campervan in Tasmania gives you free rein on where you want to go and how long you want to stay, all without giving up your creature comforts.

Most of Tasmania’s attractions are campervan-friendly; you can safely drive along the mountainsides and stop to admire the scenery, or follow coastal roads for endless views of the water. Or if you’re up for it, park your campervan at one of the national parks and explore on foot. You’ll find everything from rock formations, streams, and waterfalls to forest paths teeming with endemic flora and fauna. And the best part is that at the end of the day, you have the comfort of a campervan to come home to, where you can gear up for yet another day on the island.

Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

Thanks to Looney Tunes, Tasmania is probably best known as the home of the now-endangered Tasmanian devil. Some of us may know it as an important sailing hub. But this small Australian island is also home to a world-famous walking trail that starts at the foot of Cradle Mountain, one of the most beautiful sights this side of the Pacific.

Cradle Mountain stands on the banks of Lake St. Clair, Australia’s deepest lake. Together, they form the center of a World Heritage national park at the heart of the island, easily Tasmania’s most popular attraction. The park itself spreads over 1,200 square kilometers and includes the three other peaks that make up Cradle Mountain system: Smithies Peak, Weindorfers Tower, and Little Horn.

The best way to explore Cradle Mountain is to follow the Overland Track. The 80-km trail, which takes just under a week to complete, will take you up the slopes of Cradle Mountain, up and down smaller peaks, and to the edge of the lake, all the while treating you views you won’t soon forget. There are of course other tracks around the mountain, some much easier and others downright dangerous. The loop walk around nearby Dove Lake takes under half a day and is a great way to admire the scenery as well, including Mount Ossa, the island’s highest peak.

Accommodation around Cradle Mountain is largely provided by inns, lodges, and camping grounds. The Cynthia Bay and Cradle Valley areas have some of the best selections. Within the park, the most popular is probably the Cradle Mountain Lodge. Overnight huts can also be found in parts of the Overland Track, although slots may be limited in the warmer seasons.

Visitors get to Cradle Mountain by car or bus. Buses take off from Devonport and Launceston, two of the closest major cities. If you’re driving, you’ll want to take A1 (Bass Highway) to Don, follow B19 to Forth, and follow C132, which will take you to the Cradle Mountain exit. Total driving time is about four hours.

Climbers visit Cradle Mountain practically year-round, although the best time to go is from December to March when everything’s in full bloom. Winters can be cold and wet, owing to the mountain’s height (over 1,500 meters above sea level). From June to August, temperatures will average 12°C on the island and can drop below zero around the lake, so make sure to dress appropriately.

Visit the Sydney Harbour Bridge
If you are getting ready for an exciting Sydney holiday, you need to make sure that you prepare an itinerary that includes the major attractions. Indeed, when it comes to deciding where you will select for your accommodation, you will want to have a list of attractions developed. You will want your accommodation to be centrally and conveniently located to those attractions that you will want to include on your holiday. One of the attractions that you will want to include is the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Sydney is home to some of the most unique architecture and design in all Australia and the world. On the list of interesting and breathtaking structures in the city must be included Sydney Harbour Bridge. This, along with Sydney Harbour, need to be included on your list of attractions. The fact is that the Sydney Harbour Bridge is nothing short of a masterpiece when it comes to design and engineering. And there are many activities that you can enjoy at Sydney Harbour during your holiday.

There are plenty of accommodation choices that are ideally suited if you want to include Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge as attractions to be seen on your holiday. This includes a wide range of different types of accommodation options – including top notch hotels as well as affordable properties.

Historically, the bridge has garnered the nickname of “The Coathanger” because of its interesting and rather unusual design. Indeed, it does resemble a typical coat hanger in many ways. Up until 1967, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the tallest structure in the city. Presently, the Sydney Harbour Bridge remains the world’s widest long-span bridge in existence. It is also the tallest steel arch bridge as well. Moreover, it remains the fourth longest bridge of its type on the planet as well. Indeed, when on a Sydney holiday, many people truly enjoy the time they spend at Sydney Harbour and at the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge has a long history and a storied presence in the city as well. The bridge was formally dedicated in 1932. Oddly, on the day the bridge was dedicated, and just before the invited officials inaugurated the mammoth structure, a man judged to be perhaps rather off balanced charged forward himself – on a horse and with a sword. He cut the ribbon, allegedly in the name of King George V, the ruling British monarch of the day. (He was arrested, ultimately judged sane, and fined five pounds sterling.)

When it comes to visitors to the Harbour Bridge, the walk itself is splendid. There is also a marvelous observation deck where a visitor to the bridge can take in what can only be described as breathtaking views of both the harbor and the city. Again, if you will be taking a holiday, you must consider a walk and a visit to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

FreefallIf you are looking for an adventure with some fantastic views and site seeing thrown in for good measure, you can’t beat skydiving.  Whether you are in Sydney or Brisbane the view as you fly up and float down are both amazing.   Excitement is in the air as the plane takes off and you climb to the jumping altitude. The adrenaline rush can’t really be described as you wait at the door to leave the plane and all you see below is air.  Finally as you leave the plane and freefall, the sensations are crazy as your brain tries to make sense of what is happening!

If you want the rush without spending time training, the best choice is tandem skydiving as all it requires is a simple 5 minute safety demonstration explaining where to put your arms when you leave the plane and how to hold out your legs for a comfortable landing.  Then you meet your skydiving instructor and away you go! You are strapped into a harness and connected to front of your experienced skydiving instructor who will tell you what to do and when. The instructor pulls the shoot, looks after steering the parachute and is control of the landing, so you can just relax and enjoy the whole experience.

Parachute PulledIf you think you might like to try pulling your own shoot and landing yourself it is fantastic fun but you will need to do the training.  After the required training you will usually have 2 instructors who will jump with you on your first jump.

Skydiving Sydney gives you a couple of choices for your jumping location.  If you would like to jump over farmland you can choose to skydive tandem or on your own. If you would like to jump over the beach though, you can do this in Wollongong.  To jump from the plane over the beach has to be a tandem jump for this area.  The coastline looks amazing as you leave the plane and plummet towards the ground and you might even get to float through a cloud once your parachute opens like I did!

Skydiving Brisbane can be done tandem on the coast and this gives beautiful views of Morton Bay and the Glass House Mountains as you float down to the landing zone.

Skydiving is a something that many people set as a goal to do once in their lives and you never know, you might just fall in love with this adventure sport and find a new hobby or career!
